Theme: Towards Expressive and Embodied Interactions with AI

The UKRI “Somabotics” programme is collaborating with artists to create AI artworks that provoke human meaning making. We believe that the purpose of AI is to enable humans to make meaning of the world, of ourselves, and also of AI as part of our world. Core to our approach is understanding how artistic strategies can deliver AI experiences that provoke human interpretation. We also explore how richly embodied AI can engage the human senses and bodily experiences that are also essential to meaning making. Our panel will introduce the Somabotics programme, present new AI and robotic artworks, and reflect on how these are shaping AI and robotics research.

  • Prof Steve Benford (Chair) - introducing Somabotics
  • Dr Kieran Woodward - the AI perspective
  • Dr Richard Ramchurn - the artist’s perspective
  • Dr Stacy Hsueh - the HCI perspective

This research has been supported by UKRI/EPSRC through the Turing AI Fellowship: Somabotics: Creatively Embodying Artificial Intelligence (grant EP/Z534808/1).
